The Omicron Matter – Aftermath – New Arrangements

A new entry in the Omicron Matter – Aftermath. Rachael is shifting back to Millicent’s ship after months of work on John Smith’s ship. Smith has found replacements and Neville Carter-Frasier will be training them. Neville gives her a departing gift. Smith escorts her off the ship.

Author’s Note

This entry is longer than others in the past. But it has no good break so I decided for a longer passage. The final scenes are still being edited but the chapter and book will soon be finished. I am currently getting ideas and characters together for the next section.

Aidan J Reid has become a regular reader. Aidan is writer, adventurer, editor and media consultant.  He has three sci fi books out on the market and has been very successful on Kindle in selling them. He offered a recent blog on promotional websites that was a helpful if disappointing review of services independent writers can use to sell their books. He has blogs on promotion, writing, book reviews, interviewing authors, and life itself.  I am excited he has been reading and hope to read his books soon.

New Arrangements

Rachael was finishing packing her bunk when Neville Carter-Frasier entered the room bearing a hat box covered in ribbon. He sat in the one chair of the room and looked around. He asked, “Do you have a chair in your cabin on Canynges’ Folly?”
She pointed to the book case next to the chair and said, “Make yourself useful and hand me those notebooks…And yes I have a chair in my cabin. It helps for conversations with ambulatory types and is less awkward than the bed.” Neville had the courtesy to blush. After the notebooks were packed, Neville coughed politely and said, “Before you seal that up…” and held out the hat box.
Rachael took it and said, “There is no way this will fit.” She hafted it gently and said, “This really isn’t necessary.” Then she grinned, “But it will make my gift easier to hand over.” She set the hat box down and rolled over to the wardrobe and opened a drawer and pulled out a smaller box and handed it over.
Neville took it in surprise. And then admired the box with a neat bow. “I know it has been a long set of months. But you have been…great to work with. I count you as a friend”
Rachael blushed a little this time and said, “You aren’t the twit I remember in University. You’ve grown on me. And I will gladly have you pilot me anywhere.” She grinned a bit and said, “I will miss our sparring matches. Remember that when you open the gift.”
Neville said, “I gave you mine first so you open yours now.”
Rachael undid the ribbons and took the top off. Inside was a bowl with a sculpture inside. There were a series of small bowls that descended from a high point to the bowl -a fountain or waterfall. There were a total of 9 bowls. The highest fed two bowls to the side. In turn those two fed an another two and so on. There were four descending bowls on either side of the highest bowl making an open circle. The bowls were of a strangely colored metal – silver and blue with a striking geometric pattern. In the middle there was an open space that looked like it might accommodate a plant or another sculpture. Neville said, “press this button.” She did and there was soft light around the bowls that would be accented by the water falling.
Rachael said quietly, “It is beautiful and amazing.”
Neville said, “I was supposed to make small fountains for who ever took me on. I found the time on board monotonous and noises started to wear on me. I thought you might like it.”
Rachael said, “I shall be the envy of everyone else on Millicent’s ship.” She returned it to the hat box and said, “Now open yours.”
Neville opened the small box. There was a music box inside. He wound it and figures emerged doing a bit of a dance with swords and ropes to baroque tune. Rachael shrugged, “Perhaps not as relaxing.”
Neville said, “But something that will draw people to the room to admire it and definitely something to remember our sparring matches by. “ He returned his item to the box. “I will miss you, Miss Weiz.”
From the hall came the low voice, “As will we all, Cartier-Frazier. As will we all.”
“Not I.” Said a haughty voice from the ceiling.
“Nonsense, Camille. You just say that. But admit it. She has been your perfect foil for the last few months. Your wit has not been this sharp in decades.”
“Hmpph.”
Rachael again rolled over to the wardrobe and took out two cubes and placed them on the bed stand, “Well Camille, you have been a valuable colleague and I have even learned to appreciate cold showers. “
Smith frowned at the ceiling, “Really,Camille? That seems a bit petty for you.”
“She deserved them.”
Rachael took the cubes and placed them in Smiths hands as she said, “Consequently, I will cherish my warm showers in Canynges’ Folly all the more for your generous help. In more learned matters, I would never have solved some of those space time problems without your help. As a token of my thanks for your assistance, I acquired some cubes on the history and culture of the Americas. You will find as complete a history as we can get going back to the Indian migration. And a fine collection of art that survived the Spanish. That should help you assist Smith when he starts his trading on Earth.”
There was silence then Camille said, “I did not get you anything.”
Rachael smiled at Smith and added a wink, “Nothing is necessary. I have learned a great deal from you over the past months. Your wisdom is gift enough.”
Smith smiled and discreetly wagged a finger in Rachael’s direction. He pocketed the cubes and then said, “I am sure Camille will appreciate the cubes in our work. Won’t she.”
“Yes… I suppose I will.”
Smith pointed to the door and said, “I will escort you and your luggage to Canynges’ Folly. Mr. Carter-Frasier will be training the new employees and settling them in their quarters.
Neville puffed out his chest a little.
Rachael leaned back and said warmly, “Really? Neville as trainer. Well done.”
Neville said, “With you gone, we need a communications person and an engineer who understands the Omicron drive. Smith is also taking on another pilot.”
Smith said, “We are getting a Hoon to handle the communications. A Tymbrimi who will handle operations and working the Omicron Drive. I have also agreed to apprentice a Uycarran from the fleet.”
Rachael raised her hands to the sky and said, “God save the galaxy. There will be two now.”
Smith put his hand to his heart and said, “You wound me.” He stood straighter and said, “Carter-Fraiser get their rooms in order and a schedule for their training in my queue with in the next 90 minutes. They arrive today and I want time to correct your errors before I set you loose on them.” Neville made a brief salute and left the room quickly.
Rachael watched him leave the room and shook her head, “I hope you let him know he is competent once in a while.”
Smith loaded her bin and the hat box onto a moving pallet and said, “The young Uycarran is not the only one who is getting apprenticed. Carter-Frasier is a competent pilot and I have rewarded him for his work with you and Camille.” He moved the pallet along the hallway and said, “But he should not take my occasional moments of grace for granted.”
Rachael snorted, “That will never happen.”
As they left the ship, Smith said quietly, “You are a woman to be feared.”
Rachael said as they rolled over the pavement, “You’ve said that before but what inspired it this time?”
“You are the only person I know who has managed to embarrass Camille.”
Rachael said with a straight face, “She was valuable help and will enjoy the cubes.” She paused her rolling and smiled at Smith, “The sound in her voice when I had done something she had not anticipated will warm me for months.” She put her nose in the air rolled on, “Come along. If you drop that hat box, you’ll get no tip.”
Smith roared in laughter as he pushed the pallet towards Canynges’ Folly.

The Omicron Matter – The Battle for Juthjath – Rachael and Millicent

Coalition Attack 1

First attack wave on Guild Carrier by Coalition ships

A new entry in the Omicron Matter – the Battle for Juthjath.  The second missile may have scared the captain, but the Guild admiral does not want to be caught by the Tymbrimi.  Rachael and Neville unleash the third missile. After it detonates, a new fleet arrives.

Author’s note

MIllicent is back! I was stuck in this story for awhile trying to figure out how to end the battle. I was also missing Millicent. Then I figure out how to solve two problems at once.

Another loyal reader is Ryan Lanz and “A Writer’s Path”. A Writer’s Path has been a great resource and learning location for me.  Along with book reviews and promotions of his books, he regularly invites other authors to discuss interesting topics: “Why you should outline your novel in revision”; “Writing visually without describing everything”; “World Building: How to make a royal court” and so on.  I find myself reading articles from his sight several times a week.

Thanks for you support. Look for more on Wednesday.  (Millicent is back!)

Rachael

The captain was replaced by an admiral, “That will not happen, traitor. We are leaving now.” And the transmission stopped.
Neville did not need to be told and worked quickly this time and Smith’s ship was in transition. When it came out, Rachael released the missile and she simply nodded to Neville who quickly returned to the battleship and moved to the far side of the battleship. In a moment there was a bright flash and another sun for a moment. Rachael looked at her panel, “Radiation across the spectrum. Shielding is holding although I will bet the battleship is uncomfortable.” She looked at her panel and said, “Shit…two battleships and a dozen cruisers just showed up…where the hell did they come from?”
Smith leaned back and steepled his fingers, then smiled, “Their timing is remarkable…Hail them.”
Millicent Morgaine stood in her unisuit smiling. “Hello Smith, am I late?”

Millicent

John Smith’s voice came over the speakers, “Took you long enough, Morgaine.”
Millicent said, “I was meeting some old friends. Admiral Onuan is anxious to talk to you.”
Smith said, “Lovely, we can all get caught up over tea. But that battleship will be dumping his memory core in a moment.”
Millicent pursed her lips and said, “We can’t have that.” She looked at Felicity, “Ask Admiral Onuan to disable that ship further. Charles did you hear, Smith?”
His voice sounded strained, “I have joined the others in the effort. They have blocked self destruct protocols. But we are scrambling with the memory core right now.”
The Menanggung battleship fired to bolts at the Guild battleship communication array. The cruiser fired missiles into the engine zone. Millicent looked up at the ceiling, “Charles?”
“We are catching the pieces and trying to slow the dump, but that is all we are managing at the moment.”
Millicent grimaced, “Felicity, get Smith.”

The Omicron Matter – The Battle for Juthjath – Rachael part 3

Coalition Attack 1

First attack wave on Guild Carrier by Coalition ships

A new entry in the Omicron Matter – The Battle for Juthjath.  Rachael has deployed guidance drones to three Guild cruisers.  With the drones in place, the first demonstration is about to take place with a Guild audience.

Author’s note

My editor is caught up and things are getting tighter on the story as a consequence. I have several days of backlog to keep up. Today’s image shows what a Guild cruiser would like (at least before it is atomized by a missile traveling at 25% the speed of light).

I would like to highlight followers over the next posts. The Science Geek is a regular reader of mine, I am proud to say.  His website has great posts on all things science. He is polite enough to not correct my wild speculations on FTL travel, dark matter and energy, and relativistic matter/energy conversion (really big bangs).  However, he has some great articles on those matters that are great sources for any Sci Fi writer.

Thanks for you support and look for more on Monday.

Rachael

Smith said, “Captain, I suggest you look for your cruiser off to the starboard side before you say more.”
On cue there was a bright flash and new point of light shown in the black of space. Camille filled in, “The first cruiser is gone. There is a significant debris cloud in its place. There were several troop ships close to it. I suspect they are gone as well.”
The captain was told something. He gestured wildly, “How!…tell me how!” He turned back to the connection and snarled , “I do not know what you did, but you will pay for that…”
Smith snapped back, “I am losing my patience, Captain. Surrender or I will destroy this entire fleet.”
The captain shouted, “Just try…”
Smith looked at Rachael and made a cutting motion. Rachael broke the connection. Smith looked at Neville and nodded. Neville once again worked the ship. As it came out of transition Rachael released the second missile and said “ The second missile is away. We will have two minutes when we get back before it hits. The blast will be much closer.”
Smith smiled thinly, “Well done, Weiz. Carter-Frasier, we do not want to miss the fireworks.”
Neville grinned and returned the ship to the battle. Rachael tried to raise the battleship captian, but got nothing. Camille said, “I can get him on the screen again.”
Rachael leaned back and smirked.“Don’t waste your effort. If he doesn’t call after this one, I will clean latrines.”
Smith smirked, “No bet.”
Then off to the port side there was a new sun. Smith whispered, “Gods.” Neville exclaimed, “Shitte”
Rachael looked at her panel and said, “Why look, the captain wishes to speak.” She then told Smith “The next one will be much closer we may want to get our ships behind the battleship for it.”
Smith said, “Put the captain on. And start arranging our fleet. They will probably figure it out anyway. ”
And image of the showed the Guild captain. He was pale and shaking, “What the hell are you doing?”
Smith smiled thinly, “Showing you what it looks like on a planet when you throw an asteroid at it. Know I can keep doing it and I will. Surrender your ship or every ship in your fleet will be reduced to atoms and plasma.”
The captain was replaced by an admiral, “That will not happen, traitor. We are leaving now.” And the transmission stopped.

The Omicron – The Battle for Juthjath – Rachael

CoalitionShips

A new entry in the Omicron Matter – The Battle for Juthjath. Smith and his fleet are pursuing the second battleship. As the pursue the big ship, smaller cruisers are fleeing the planet as well.  Smith decides to try the missile attack on a ship. Rachael begins preparing for the attack and plans ahead.

Author’s Note

I will admit I am stretching this out a little. But there will be exciting bits throughout.  I have gotten ahead of my editor and that is always a dangerous thing.

Thanks for your support.

Look for more on Friday

Rachael

Rachael rushed to the drone storage bay. As she pushed herself along, she asked, “Camille, how close were the support cruisers and the tugs to the asteroids?”
Camille responded, “The tugs were next to the asteroid. The cruisers were at 15 kilometers.” There was a pause and then she filled in, “The energy release was probably lethal to at least 20 kilometers. Radiation effects would go farther but ships are well insulated for that.”
Rachael said, “Send me the coordinates of three cruisers that are outside a 25 kilometer radius of the battleship and send them to me.”
When Rachael got to the drones, Camille had the coordinates. Rachael programmed in one and sent it on its way. She called to Smith and said, “The drone is in place.” She then set the next two and sent them the next two coordinates. She returned to the bridge and headed to her spot on the bridge.
Smith said, “What took you so long getting back?”
Rachael smiled and said, “Personal matters. Did I get the drone in place on time?”
Smith leaned back and smiled, “Just…Carter-Frasier are you ready?”
Neville nodded and began his work. The ship went into transition and then out and Rachael released the missile. “First missile away.”
Smith said, “First?”
Rachael smiled thinly, “When I’ve dealt with bullies, the first cut just gets them cranky. It is the second one that makes them think. The third is the one that fixes matter.”
Smith smiled and said, “Get us back to the fleet.”
Neville returned to the ship to the fleet which was now in range of the battleship. Rachael hailed the battleship but got no response. Camille said, “Let me help.” The screen filled with the battleship captain who looked at Smith and said, “I have nothing to say to you treasonous scum.”

The Omicron Matter – The Battle for Juthjath – Rachael

Battleship Attack from Brian Tuireann

Battleship Attack from Brian Tuireann

A new entry in the Omicron Matter – the Battle for Juthjath. The first battleship has been disabled. Smith wants the second battleship and so begins the chase. He tells Rachael to get some missiles and drones ready for a new round of attacks.

Author’s Note

My apologies for missing the post on Friday. My company is shutting down its physical office and going “virtual”. “Virtual” in this case means working from home and renting rooms for meetings. Regardless, Friday was spent hauling office furniture and cleaning up.  But I am back. The next few posts will be the same scene but it is a long one.  I have an image started but it needs some adjustments and isn’t quite ready. So we will be using an existing one.

Look for more on Wednesday…really.  Thanks for your support

Rachael

The battleship floated in its orbit, but showed no signs of control. Tuireann’s final attack had broken the bridge control of the engines. The chaos of the garbage chute destruction had made any repair and recovery impossible. Neville said, “There are dozens if not hundreds of small ships leaving the battleship.”
Smith said, “They are abandoning ship. Brian better get his negotiation skills in order or he will have nothing but a light show after this.”
Camille said, “Ian and others managed to abort the self-destruct. They are downloading the core memory now. But damage is extensive. It will take weeks or more to repair.”
He stood and said, “Not our problem. Miss Weiz find our remaining ships and direct them to the next battleship.”
Rachael looked at her screen, “All the Guild ships are firing engines to leave orbit. The battleship, the cruisers and support ships are all trying to get away.”
Smith snapped, “Not if I have anything to say about it. Carter-Frasier chase the battleship.”
Neville said, “The course is laid, but they are moving fast.”
Smith growled “Organize the other ships and use the Omicron drives to get ahead if you have to.”
Rachael said, “They won’t be surprised this time.”
Smith paced as the ship jumped into transition. Then stopped, “Can you hit one of the cruisers with your missile trick?”
Rachael scratched her head, “I will need to program a drone and then get it to the target.” She pulled away from her console and turned around, “I would need 15 minutes of real time.”
Smith said, “Start now while we are in transition. Pick one close enough to the battleship to scare them, but far enough away they will survive the energy release. And if you do it in 10 minutes, I will let you help me put Winifred Stanhope down.”
